Polite Pet Behaviors and Enrichment for a Senior Dog captioned

Cricket is a 14 year old rat terrier with age-related hearing and visual impairments. She loves training as much as my other dogs. She learned all the behaviors in this video after age 10 and is still learning new things. Thanks to Ratbone Rescues for letting me adopt this lovely little dog so many years ago. This is the captioned version. The non-captioned version can be seen at www.youtube.com .

K9 Handling Day 1

Today marked the first day of a four-day course in K9 handling, organised by the Malta Civil Protection Department under the supervision of Mr. John Gera. The course was attended by two CPD volunteers, five members of the EFRU and one from Malta Red Cross. The course is being given by Keith and Carol Warwick, professional instructors registered with the Assocation of Pet Dog Trainers in the United Kingdom. The instructors flew over to Malta this morning from England, and have extensive experience in training dogs for Search and Rescue. K9 handlers were given intensive lectures and practical sessions on training techniques. The instructors assessed K9 Lady and K9 Danko — dogs currently undergoing training in Search and Rescue — and gave their handlers some tips to aid in training. The new generation of Search and Rescue dogs — four 9-week old puppies adopted by EFRU volunteers — were also assessed and demonstrated their potential.

Teaching an untrained dog to stay for over 30 seconds: First Dog Training Lesson

There are many ways to teach dogs skills… my preference is to coach the dog into performing the behaviour I want to see (in this case…stay)… once the dog becomes proficient at the skill, then I might focus on teaching him the english word for it. As you can see, naming the command ‘stay’ isn’t the first component of teaching Leo to stay… SUCCESS… he just did it for 30 seconds! In this video I teach Leo a rule… the rule is don’t leave your house. He naturally wants to see what I’m doing so his only option becomes ‘staying at the door’. In this sense, it’s quite simple for me to nurture the behaviour that I want Leo to perform. One key to success is remaining calm… another is remaining present. Dogs learn rules in the moment. Teaching moments are brief… so be present…cease your opportunity.

Vela: Our Ticino Vacation

Mom, Dad and I just got back from 2 weeks on vacation in Ticino. I have to give them a big compliment: they behaved themselves very well. All of our training has paid off. I think I can truely say, I can take Dad or Mom anywhere and not be ashamed of their behavior. In fact, I’m so proud of Dad. They wanted to go to one of those restuarant things, where 2-leggers eat when they’re not at home, but the lady woldn’t let ME in. This had never happened before. Well, Dad said, "Well, if my dog isn’t good enough to eat here, than niether am I" and we all went to another town with another restaurant. ————— Copyright disclaimer under Section 107 of the copyright act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. If you stop learning, you die and I’m not ready yet. this is one of the things I love about all the things I’m involved in: IT dog training music I have never felt I’ve had a handle on any of them and have always enjoyed the examination and re-examination of what I do with an eye for improvement. Some people may not like this. Some might expect a "professional" to know it all already and be able to do it all perfectly already. That’s more theor problem than mine. the best pros in all three fields that I’ve had contact with, if they taught me anything, it’s been that – there’s always someone doing it better than you you can learn from if you keep an open, critical mind.
